MICHIKO: a child born of war
Play Video

SYNOPSIS

An untold story of Michiko who was born of a Chinese mother and

a Japanese father in China during the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945). This short animation film is based on an interview with Michiko and is narrated by Michiko herself. The histories of Sino-Japanese children born of consensual relationships during the war are largely forgotten, and the film is the first attempt to recover their lost voices.

This project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Sklodowska-Curie grant agreement  No 642571.

“Michiko is a wonderful short film that brings
to life the emotional journey of a child born of war and her mother in the aftermath of
the Second Sino-Japanese War.
The attention to detail coupled with a sensitive and empathetic artist’s eye has resulted in an animation that successfully translates very personal experiences into a relatable film of great impact.”

Professor Sabine Lee, Department of History, University of Birmingham
